Tri-State Heating & Cooling

You set the thermostat to 70.

The family room feels great. The upstairs bedroom feels like 76. Another bedroom feels like 65.

Sound familiar?

Uneven heating is one of those household problems people often live with for years because they assume, “That’s just the way our house is.”

It doesn’t necessarily have to be.

For Liberty Township homeowners, especially those in larger or multi-story homes, uneven temperatures can have several causes.

Start With the Simple Things

Before calling for service, walk through your house.

Make sure supply registers haven’t accidentally been closed or covered by furniture, rugs or curtains.

Check your furnace filter. A badly clogged filter can restrict airflow throughout the system.

Also consider whether you’ve recently changed anything. Did you move furniture? Finish a basement? Add a room? Replace windows? Start keeping bedroom doors closed?

Small changes can affect how air moves through a house.

Your Ductwork May Be Part of the Problem

The furnace creates the heat, but your duct system has to deliver it.

Leaks, restrictions, poorly balanced ducts or inadequate return-air pathways can make some rooms much harder to heat than others.

This is one reason replacing a furnace with a larger one isn’t automatically the answer.

In fact, ENERGY STAR specifically advises that heating and cooling equipment needs to be properly sized for the home. Bigger isn’t necessarily better.

When Should You Call an HVAC Professional?

Consider having the system evaluated when:

  • the temperature difference between rooms is substantial;
  • a room that used to be comfortable suddenly isn’t;
  • airflow from certain registers is noticeably weak;
  • the furnace runs frequently but particular rooms remain cold;
  • you’ve resorted to space heaters every winter just to make rooms usable.

A good evaluation should look beyond the thermostat and furnace. Airflow, ductwork and the characteristics of the home all matter.

If your Liberty Township home has its own collection of “hot rooms” and “cold rooms,” Tri State Heating & Cooling can help determine what’s actually causing the imbalance. Contact us to schedule an evaluation.
