Tri-State Heating & Cooling

When it’s time for a new furnace, homeowners naturally compare brands, efficiency ratings and prices.

But there’s another question that may matter just as much:

Is this actually the right furnace for your house?

A furnace shouldn’t be selected simply because the previous furnace was a certain size—or because a bigger furnace sounds better.

Bigger Isn’t Better

An oversized furnace can heat a home too quickly and shut down, then start again.

An undersized system may struggle to maintain the desired temperature during colder Southwest Ohio weather.

Proper sizing considers the actual heating needs of the house.

ENERGY STAR recommends that contractors use a Manual J calculation to determine the heating and cooling load rather than relying solely on square footage or the size of the old equipment.

Your House Has Its Own Personality

Two homes with similar square footage in Mason or Lebanon don’t necessarily have identical heating requirements.

Windows, insulation, ceiling heights, orientation, air leakage, additions and other characteristics can change the heating load.

That’s why a quality furnace installation begins before the new equipment ever arrives.

Ask This Question Before Signing

When getting estimates, ask:

“How did you determine what size furnace my home needs?”

The answer can tell you a great deal about the installation you’re about to purchase.

The Department of Energy also notes that poor installation—including oversizing and problems with the distribution system—can reduce efficiency, decrease comfort and shorten equipment life.

You’re going to live with this equipment for years.

It’s worth making sure the furnace fits the house, not simply the available space in the mechanical room.
